Deep Tissue Massage: What It Is and What You Need to Know

Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension and restricted movement. Learn what it is, how it works, and what to expect from your treatment.

By The Fixx Massage Therapy

Deep tissue massage is one of the most requested treatments at The Fixx Massage Therapy in South Etobicoke — and for good reason. It is one of the most effective ways to address chronic muscle tension, stubborn tightness, and restricted movement.

But despite its popularity, there are many misconceptions about what deep tissue massage is and how it should feel. Here is what you need to know.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Unlike relaxation massage, which uses broad, flowing strokes with light to moderate pressure, deep tissue massage uses slow, deliberate, focused pressure to release chronic tension and adhesions.

The goal is not to apply as much pressure as possible — it is to reach the deeper tissues effectively without causing pain or protective tension.

What Deep Tissue Massage Is Not

It Is Not “No Pain, No Gain”

One of the most harmful myths in massage therapy is the idea that more pressure equals better results. Effective deep tissue work should be intense but not painful. If the pressure is too deep, your body will tense up defensively, making the treatment less effective and potentially causing tissue damage.

It Is Not the Same as Deep Pressure Massage

Deep pressure massage simply means applying firm pressure to surface muscles. Deep tissue massage is a specific technique that accesses deeper layers of tissue through slow, intentional pressure.

It Is Not Always the Right Choice

Deep tissue massage is excellent for chronic tension, but it is not always appropriate for acute injuries, inflammation, or certain health conditions. Your therapist will help determine the right approach for your body.

What Conditions Does It Help?

Deep tissue massage is effective for:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Upper back pain and stiffness
  • Tight glutes and piriformis syndrome
  • Hamstring tightness
  • IT band syndrome
  • Postural dysfunction
  • Recovery from injuries
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Muscle adhesions and scar tissue

How It Works

When muscles are chronically tight, the fibres can become stuck together in what are called adhesions — bands of rigid tissue that restrict movement and cause pain. Deep tissue massage works by:

  • Applying slow, sustained pressure to release adhesions
  • Lengthening shortened muscle fibres
  • Breaking up scar tissue from old injuries
  • Improving blood flow to oxygen-deprived tissues
  • Resetting the resting tone of overactive muscles

The techniques include deep stripping (slow strokes along the muscle fibres), friction (cross-fibre pressure to break up adhesions), and trigger point pressure release.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

During a deep tissue massage, your therapist will communicate with you about pressure. You should feel a “good hurt” — intense but manageable discomfort, never sharp pain. If the pressure is too much, say so. Your therapist will adjust.

After treatment, it is common to feel some soreness for a day or two, similar to post-workout soreness. This is normal as your tissues release and reorganize. Staying hydrated and applying heat can help manage any post-treatment soreness.

Most people notice significant improvement in their pain and mobility within 24–48 hours of treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For acute tension, one or two sessions may be sufficient. For chronic conditions that have developed over months or years, a series of treatments is usually needed to create lasting change. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan based on your assessment.
